First off, this movie probably deserves 2.75 stars, not 3, but since that's not an option, it gets the benefit of the doubt. This is a film that I think I need to see again to fully appreciate it, but, I don't want to watch it again. I also, don't quite understand how Natalie Portman won the Oscar for her role. I didn't think she was that great. This is an interesting film and one to check out, but to really get a sense of what Aronofsky is capapble of, check out Pi (1998) and Requiem for a Dream (2000).

"Black Swan" by Yojimbo

A young ballerina receives the starring role she has always dreamed of but the resulting pressure causes a descent into mental deterioration and madness. Black Swan is essentially about the pressure to be "perfect" and the way society sits in judgement over young women, and how peers and otherwise well-meaning parental figures can resent their success leading to insecurity and anxiety even amongst those who are considered the pinnacle of beauty and achievement. As we saw in Requiem For A Dream, Aronofsky has a real knack for representing mental deterioration and his use of surreal imagery is both creative and shocking, a couple of sequences being far more chilling than most so-called "horror" films these days. Natalie Portman puts in a compelling performance as the fra...

Ambition, desire, failure, devastation.

This astounding picture comes from the man who almost never disappoints me story-wise: Darren Aronofsky. He's a bit like Batman. Ordinary on the outside, but a masterful genius when doing his craft.

Natalie Portman deserved her Oscar. The way she portrayed Nina was innocent, fragile and honest.
Especially her transformation just made her more vulnerable and ambient in her role. The constant push in the film is for her to 'lose herself' in the black swan, since she had already mastered the white one. It felt like Portman was losing herself in the role simultaneously. What started out smalltime ended up as a triumph, much like the character.

You could really tell this was a Darren Aronofsky movie, because it had all the usual qualities. The eclectic dialogue, unstable camerawork and ...
