Romero's first zombie film is gruesome, raw, and shocking. The black and white cinematography and rough gore creates a pseudo-documentary look. It's incredible that Romero used amateur actors, for the most part, as they all turn in believable performances as scared stranger thrown together. No social commentary here - just pure fright.

"Night Of The Living Dead" by Yojimbo

A young woman and her brother are attacked in a cemetery by a strange shambling figure, and she flees to a remote house where a motley crew of survivors are holing up against a horde of flesh eating zombies. George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is the seminal zombie film that spawned an entire genre, and is an abject lesson that strong ideas can make a brilliant film without a big budget to back it up. Duane Jones is great as the pragmatic hero who keeps a cool head and sets about survival as a job of work, and Romero's choice of a black actor to play the hero was clearly a conscious one. It's a story of the whole fabric of society unraveling; a black man taking centre stage and ordering middle class whites around, the system is shown to be ineffectual and run by bickering bureaucrats...

Night of the Living Dead (1968) review

Zombies roam around looking to feed which emanated from radioactive contamination from a space probe that exploded in the Earth's atmosphere. Brother and sister Barbara (Judith O'Dea) and Johnny (Russell Streiner) visit a cemetery when a "ghoul" attacks them. Barbara escapes and is rescued and protected by Ben (Duane Jones). In the cellar Harry (Karl Hardman) and Helen Cooper (Marilyn Eastman), their daughter Karen (Kyra Schon), and a couple Tom (Keith Wayne) and Judy (Judith Ridley) meets Ben.

Sometimes simplicity is the best way to convey a horror film thru tastefully created gore and solid acting. The story is vital to make this picture work. Topics involving survival, leadership, compromise and staying calm in dire situations were well displayed. The film composes of a fas...

Ground Breaking Horror

Night of the Living Dead set the standard and for all intensive purposes wrote the rulebook on how to effectively craft a Zombie film. Romero's now classic film was very controversial upon its release and many films took aspects of this film in hopes of creating an equally effective horror film.

The gore in this film is something that drew much attention upon its release. While not as gut wrenching as one would expect to see in today’s landscape of "horror" this film featured many scenes that at the time were visually disturbing. This film also features many scares that would be duplicated countless times over the years by just about every horror movie. The action and suspense sequences in the film are also very well orchestrated – this being something many films failed to duplicate. ...
